Strand: Prayer, Liturgy and Sacraments (PLSL7-8E1)

Levels 7 and 8

As Christian communities have formed through time, their identity and offering of praise to God has been expressed through prayer, liturgy and sacraments. Each Sacrament has its own history, symbols and rituals reflecting local customs.

Examine the rituals, symbols and history of the Christian sacraments of initiation, healing and loving service with a view to appreciating the sense of communal praise to God and identity they enable.

Elaborations

Sacraments are sacred, visible signs of God’s loving grace and presence to humanity. For the Christian, Sacraments are fundamental to an understanding of humankind’s relationship with God. Religious practice mirrors life in the celebration of key events and life transitions/rites of passage with/by sign, ritual and word. Significant religious and social rites of passage are celebrated through the Sacraments.

Even though there is a rich diversity of local customs in celebration of sacred rituals, it is through the rituals of the Sacraments that the Church celebrates its unity and sense of community. Through the various rituals and rites of the Sacraments, the life, prayer and worship of the Church is expressed. Sacramental rituals similarly capture the faith and beliefs of the community.
