In common Christian usage, the term Church is used for Catholic Christians in three related ways:
- The entire people of God throughout the world.
- The diocese, which is also known as the local Church.
- The assembly of believers gathered for the celebration of the liturgy, especially the Eucharist. In accepting the invitation to follow Jesus, Catholic Christians look to his example in the New Testament of the Bible, as well as the example of Mary, the Mother of God, and the saints. Guided by prayer and the teachings of the Church, Christians are called to respond to these examples, through word and action, in the everyday circumstances of their lives.
The liturgical year sets out to attune the life of the Christian to the life of Jesus, the Christ.
